Slow Feeding 101: A Smarter Way to Feed Your Pet

Slow Feeding 101: A Smarter Way to Feed Your Pet

Why Slow Feeding Is Becoming a Smarter Way to Feed Your Pet

Published by PawZeno | August 2026

Mealtime is one of the most important parts of your pet's day.

For some dogs and cats, however, mealtime lasts about as long as it takes to say, "Ready, set, eat!"

If your pet regularly finishes a meal in a matter of seconds, you're not alone. More pet parents are looking beyond a traditional food bowl and exploring ways to make feeding more engaging, interactive, and intentional.

That's where slow feeding and pet enrichment come in.

Pets Are More Than Pets — They're Part of the Family

Pet ownership continues to be a major part of Canadian households.

According to Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, approximately 12.2 million Canadian households owned a dog and/or cat in 2024, representing a population of about 17.2 million dogs and cats. Dog ownership has also grown over recent years, with the number of dog-owning households increasing at an estimated 3.3% annual rate from 2019 to 2024.

And pet spending continues to grow.

Canadian pet-food retail sales reached approximately C$6.7 billion in 2024, up significantly from 2019. The Canadian market is also becoming increasingly sophisticated, with consumers showing greater interest in premium and health-oriented products.

That shift creates an interesting question:

If we're paying more attention to what our pets eat, shouldn't we also pay attention to how they eat?

What Is Slow Feeding?

Slow feeding is simply a way of encouraging your pet to take more time during meals rather than consuming food as quickly as possible.

Instead of putting food into a completely open bowl, a slow feeder uses ridges, grooves, mazes, raised sections, or other designs that make your pet work around the bowl to reach the food.

The goal isn't to make eating difficult.

It's to make eating more deliberate and engaging.

Think of it as turning:

"Here's your food."

into:

"Let's make mealtime a little more interesting."

Why Do Some Pets Eat So Fast?

Fast eating can happen for many reasons.

Some dogs are simply enthusiastic eaters. Others may have learned to eat quickly from competition with other animals, habit, excitement, or simply because food is highly rewarding.

Whatever the reason, a traditional bowl offers very little resistance.

Food is sitting there.

The pet eats it.

Done.

A slow feeder changes the experience by introducing obstacles between your pet and the food.

That can make the meal last longer and add an element of problem-solving.

Slow Feeding Can Also Add Enrichment

One of the most interesting developments in modern pet care is the growing focus on enrichment.

Enrichment isn't necessarily about buying more toys.

It's about giving pets appropriate opportunities to use natural behaviors such as sniffing, licking, searching, exploring, and problem-solving.

That's why products such as:

  • Slow feeder bowls

  • Lick mats

  • Lick bowls

  • Puzzle feeders

  • Treat-dispensing toys

  • Interactive feeders

have become popular tools for pet parents looking to make everyday routines more engaging.

At PawZeno, we think mealtime is one of the easiest places to start.

The Difference Between Feeding and Enrichment

Imagine two meals.

Meal #1

Food goes into a regular bowl.

Your dog eats.

The bowl is empty.

The experience is over.

Meal #2

Food is placed into a slow feeder.

Your dog has to navigate around the bowl.

They sniff.

They lick.

They work around the grooves.

They spend more time interacting with their food.

The food may be exactly the same.

The experience is completely different.

That's the idea behind enrichment feeding.

What About Lick Mats?

Slow feeders aren't the only way to make feeding more engaging.

Lick mats and lick bowls can also turn treats and certain foods into longer-lasting activities.

The licking action itself can be engaging for many pets, which is why lick-based enrichment has become another popular option for pet parents.

Depending on the product and what you're feeding, lick mats can be used with appropriate wet foods, treats, or other pet-safe foods.

Always choose ingredients appropriate for your specific pet, and supervise your pet when introducing a new enrichment product.

Is a Slow Feeder Right for Every Pet?

Not necessarily.

Every pet is different.

Some pets adapt immediately to a slow feeder. Others may need a simpler design before progressing to a more challenging one.

When choosing a slow feeder, consider:

Your pet's size

A feeder designed for a small dog may not be appropriate for a large breed.

Their eating style

A very fast eater may benefit from a more structured design, while a slower eater may only need mild enrichment.

Ease of cleaning

Food can collect in grooves and corners, so choosing a feeder that's easy to clean is important.

Material

Look for products made from appropriate, durable, pet-safe materials.

Supervision

Whenever introducing a new feeding or enrichment product, monitor your pet's interaction with it.

And remember: a slow feeder isn't a substitute for veterinary advice. If your pet consistently has problems while eating, coughs, vomits, regurgitates, struggles to swallow, or shows other concerning symptoms, talk to your veterinarian.

The Bigger Trend: Smarter Pet Care

The pet industry is becoming increasingly focused on wellness, convenience, and the overall pet experience.

The American Pet Products Association reported US$158 billion in U.S. pet-industry spending for 2025 and projects approximately US$165 billion for 2026. APPA's latest research also points toward evolving pet-owner behaviors and continued spending despite tighter household budgets.

In Canada, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada similarly reports growing demand for premium and health-oriented pet products, while e-commerce has become an increasingly important part of pet-product purchasing.

This reflects a broader change in how people think about their pets.

We're not simply asking:

"What does my pet need?"

We're increasingly asking:

"How can I make my pet's everyday life better?"

That's where enrichment fits in.

Start With One Small Change

You don't need to completely redesign your pet's routine.

Try one change.

If your dog eats extremely quickly, consider trying an appropriately sized slow feeder.

If your pet loves licking treats, explore a lick mat.

If your pet gets bored easily, try an interactive feeder.

Then observe.

Does your pet seem interested?

Do they engage with the product?

Is it easy for you to clean?

Does it fit naturally into your routine?

The best enrichment product is one that works for both you and your pet.
